The Tories are back-tracking for now but the fact they led on the IHT issue in the first place reveals a recognition that this is an invidious tax that needs much higher thresholds in the first instance and should ultimately be abolished altogether. It is conceptually double taxation of the worst kind. We pay tax on the income when we earn it and then need to pay on the remaining portion again when we die.
